The last male northern white rhino in the world has died.
The death of the 45-year-old rhino named Sudan means there are only two females left of the species, CNN reported.
The male rhino’s health had been deteriorating in recent days and a veterinary team decided to euthanize him, the conservation group WildAid announced Tuesday.
“He was a gentle giant, his personality was just amazing and given his size, a lot of people were afraid of him. But there was nothing mean about him,” said Elodie Sampere, a representative for Ol Pejeta Conservancy in Kenya, where the rhino lived.
