Scotland Yard has settled legal claims from seven female activists who said undercover police had formed “intimate sexual relationships” with them while investigating protest movements.

The police apologized Friday for the “totally unacceptable” behavior of a number of undercover officers in the now-disbanded units. The financial terms of the settlement are being kept secret.

The settlement, which included public reading of the extensive apology that praised the women for coming forward, comes four years after the women started legal action after discovering they had been in relationships with men who were concealing their identifies as undercover police.
