John McCain is in a delicate political position.
The presumptive Republican presidential nominee is hoping to appeal to increasingly influential Hispanic electorates in California, New Mexico, Nevada, Colorado and other Western states while reassuring law-and-order conservatives that he is serious about stopping the inflow of illegal immigrants.
Politically, polls have Hispanics continuing to trend toward Democrats.
Still, McCain is vowing to win over the constituency even as he continues to call for tightened borders as the prerequisite to the more comprehensive reforms many voters seek. He also is avoiding taking on Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio over his controversial neighborhood crime sweeps.
