The merging of problems concerning corruption and politics poses a threat to the Communist Party’s rule in China, the People’s Daily says.

“Corruption problems and political problems have interwoven, and it has seriously undermined communist rule and the ruling party’s unity,” said a commentary published in the party mouthpiece on Friday.

“[Corrupt officials] have formed corruption networks and engaged in collusion between supervising officials and subordinate ones, and between officials and businessmen.”

The signed article was a response to President Xi Jinping’s speech at a meeting of the country’s top anti-graft agency, the Central Commission for Discipline Inspection, on Tuesday, in which Xi called for continued corruption eradication efforts.
