As leaders of countries from around the world struggle with how to respond to the refugee crisis that’s gripping much of Europe, Australia is considering taking in more refugees – if they’re Christian.
And “hundreds” of refugees in Europe are already becoming at least nominal Christians to avoid being returned to their homelands, according to the Daily Mail.
Under intense public pressure to house immigrants fleeing the war-torn Middle East, the Australian government is contemplating prioritizing refugees based on their minority status.
As taken from ABC Net:
Government ministers, like Malcolm Turnbull, have argued for accepting more Syrian Christians, and Foreign Minister Julie Bishop has nominated minorities like the Yazidis.
One backbencher told the ABC the message being sent to the Prime Minister by some in the Coalition was clear: “No more Muslim men”.
Mr Turnbull said yesterday he was very concerned about the plight of Christian communities in Syria.
Senate Leader Eric Abetz has also highlighted the case for Christians to be prioritized.
“It should be on the basis of need and given the Christians are the most persecuted group in the world, and especially in the Middle East, I think it stands to reason that they would be pretty high up on the priority list for resettlement.”
No final decision has yet been made, but the Australian parliament is expected to receive a backlash of criticism from the United Nations and much of the public for its stance.
In the meantime, Muslim refugees seeking asylum in Germany are converting to Christianity “in droves” in order to bolster their chances, the Daily Mail reported.
Hundreds of Iranian and Afghan asylum seekers have changed their faiths at the evangelical Trinity Church in Berlin, according to the Mail.
German Chancellor Angela Merkel described the massive influx of refugees as “breathtaking,” and vowed those who need protection will receive it. Merkel also indicated there will be refugees who will be sent back.
While many refugees vow their decision to convert to Christianity is genuine, conversion could help them avoid being sent back to their homelands where the religious persecution of Christians awaits.
