NASA engineers are working on a small helicopter that could “scout” the trail for future Mars rovers, Zee News reports.
If successful, the low-flying Mars helicopter would be lookout for the rover every day, helping engineers back on Earth plan the best driving route, the US space agency said in a statement.
With the help of the proposed helicopter, the distance currently driven by the Mars rovers could be tripled, providing a new level of visual information to help engineers navigate sites to explore.
The helicopter could also be used to look for features for the rover to study in further detail.
