A top Nicaraguan diplomat was found murdered in his Bronx apartment Thursday morning when his driver came to take him to the United Nations General Assembly, police sources said.

César Antonio Mercado Pavón, 34, was found around 10:30 a.m. with his throat slashed in his apartment on the Grand Concourse near E. 180th St.

Mercado had been the Nicaraguan consul-general – No. 2 in the mission after the ambassador – for eight years. It was unclear what his title was when he died.
