Obama will not violate the Constitution and sign an executive order legalizing millions of illegal aliens this summer as previously promised.
Instead, he wait until after the November elections. A number of vulnerable Democrats are at risk if he fulfills his promise to address the issue this month without congressional consultation.
The Democrats at risk include Sens. Mark Pryor of Arkansas, Mary Landrieu of Louisiana and Kay Hagan of North Carolina.
According to unnamed White House officials, Obama made the decision after returning from a NATO summit held last week. The officials said Obama will sign an executive order on immigration by the end of the year.
Advocates of illegal immigration expressed disappointment at Obama’s decision to wait until after the elections.
“We are bitterly disappointed in the president and we are bitterly disappointed in the Senate Democrats,” said Frank Sharry, executive director of America’s Voice. “We advocates didn’t make the reform promise; we just made the mistake of believing it. The president and Senate Democrats have chosen politics over people, the status quo over solving real problems.”
