Shocking photos show the moment a crazed gunman wearing a white smock shot a Philadelphia police officer “in the name of Islam”.

The incident happened last night in West Philadelphia. 33-year-old officer Jesse Hartnett was sat in his patrol vehicle when the gunman fired 13 shots through the driver side window.

“Shots fired! I’m shot! I’m bleeding heavily!” Hartnett is heard yelling on police radio.

According to a CBS News report, the gunman later confessed that he had carried out the attempted assassination “in the name of Islam”.

Surveillance photos from the scene show the gunman wearing a white smock.

“When you look at the video — we have video that captured all of this — it’s one of the scariest things I’ve ever seen,” Philadelphia Police Commissioner Richard Ross said during a press conference.

The officer, who is in hospital but expected to recover, returned fire and hit the gunman three times.

An ABC News report about the incident contained no mention of the fact that the gunman attempted to kill the officer “in the name of Islam”.

A second officer who responded to the shooting described the attack as relentless.

“It was literally a fight to the death,” the officer said in a Facebook post, adding that he was “damn proud” of other cops who chased the gunman on foot and “caught him a block away, the smoking pistol still in his possession.”

“Not many people would have survived an ambush like that,” said the officer, addressing his comments to Hartnett. “He got the drop on you and had every intention of killing a cop.”
