New York City officials reportedly sent out an emergency alert to residents 40 minutes late informing them to “remain indoors” and “call 911 if injured.”
“US Geological Survey figures indicate the quake might have been felt by a staggering 42 million people,” reports the New York Post.
The quake has caused the FAA to issue ground stops for airplanes at JFK and Newark airports. It’s reportedly the third strongest earthquake to hit the region in 280 years, according to Raw Alerts.
The tremors interrupted a United Nations Security Council meeting.

The epicenter of the quake apparently includes the area surrounding the Trump National Golf Club in Bedminster, New Jersey.
“The Fire Department of New York said there were no initial reports of damage,” writes the Daily Mail.
On X, New Jersey Gov. Phil Murphy (D) told residents, “Our region just experienced an earthquake with a preliminary magnitude of 4.7, with an epicenter near Readington in Hunterdon County,” adding, “We have activated our State Emergency Operations Center. Please do not call 911 unless you have an actual emergency.”
