Pennsylvania election officials are “bracing for conspiracy theories, protests and violence” ahead of the state’s anticipated lag in vote-counting, according to CBS News’ 60 Minutes.

Al Schmidt, the Keystone State’s top election official, cited the state’s law preventing early processing of mail-in ballots for the anticipated delays after Election Day, and claimed that was in part why it took four days for votes to be counted in the 2020 election.

“That window of time between the polls closing and races being called, I think, has shown to be a real vulnerability, where people seeking to undermine confidence in those results if they’re going to lose have really exploited,” Schmidt said

“When you have half of your voters vote by mail, like we did in 2020, counting those votes takes time,” Schmidt added.

Speaking to 60 Minutes from a ballot intake center in Chester County, elections administrator Karen Barsoum argued that the arduous and complicated process of opening a folded mail-in ballot will cause major delays in expected voting results.

“So, hypothetically speaking, if we have 100,000 mail-in ballots, we have to deal with double the amount of the envelopes, which is a long process,” Barsoum said, adding it will take several minutes to process each mail-in ballot.

The Washington Post likewise reported in July that processing mail-in ballots, not just in Pennsylvania, but also Wisconsin, will likely take days.

“Despite widespread calls for change, Pennsylvania is likely to again take several days to announce this year’s winner, alarming state election officials who worry the delay will cause confusion, deteriorate trust in the process and make election workers targets for harassment.”

“If the electoral college comes down to Pennsylvania or Wisconsin, we might still face a long period where we don’t know the winner,” said Rachel Orey, an elections expert at the Bipartisan Policy Center.

Prior to 2020, it was expected for all states to have their votes counted on Election Day, which sometimes would run late into the night.

But after mail-in ballots were approved in the wake of the COVID-19 plandemic, normal procedures and expectations were abandoned.

The exception was the 2000 Bush v Gore election, where the Florida election recount took over a month to resolve due to the closeness of the race and subsequent legal battles.

Now the media is priming the narrative to make it seem like skepticism over prolonged delays in vote-counting — an otherwise unusual event — is extreme and uncivil.
