An Afghan has been arrested in Germany after fatally stabbing his 41-year-old female boss during the evening cash count at the ‘New Yorker’ clothing store in Krefeld, North Rhine-Westphalia.
According to local police and reporting by Bild, the attack occurred around 7:20 p.m. on Wednesday evening in the store’s recreation room, where the victim and the 25-year-old suspect were counting the day’s earnings.
“The woman was seriously injured with a knife, so that she succumbed to her injuries at the scene,” the Krefeld police stated.
Shortly after the stabbing, the suspect allegedly fled the scene with the day’s takings. However, his escape was short-lived. As he exited the store on Hochstraße, he ran directly into a group of officers and was immediately arrested.
The Krefeld Public Prosecutor’s Office has confirmed the homicide investigation is underway and that the suspect was taken into custody on Wednesday evening. “The perpetrator was arrested in the evening. He will be brought before a magistrate today,” a spokesperson told German media.
Police have since established a homicide squad to lead the investigation. While the motive behind the attack remains unclear, the suspect is expected to be formally charged with manslaughter and held in pre-trial detention. It is unclear why he will not be charged with murder.
Outside the store, colleagues left white flowers and a farewell card in memory of the victim which read, “The fact that you have left us has shaken us deeply. We want you to know that you were a wonderful person. You don’t often find someone like that. Now you’re in a better place.”
Authorities are expected to release more details following a scheduled press briefing at noon on Thursday.
