Another German police officer has been attacked with a knife by an Afghan migrant, just days after a police officer died in a vicious knife attack.
A 22-year-old Afghan man was arrested on Wednesday evening for attacking a police officer on the island of Rügen, in northeast Germany.
The police officer was responding to reports of a man kicking his bus and destroying conservative election posters with a kitchen knife. One of the posters bore the slogan, “Citizens for Conservative Values.”
After initially complying with police, the man then launched an attack with the knife. The officers managed to restrain the attacker without injury. The attacker himself, however, sustained injuries that saw him hospitalized.
He has been charged with resisting arrest, assaulting an officer and destruction of property.
The attack came just a few days after a fatal stabbing in Mannheim, when an Afghan migrant attacked a prominent German critic of Islam as he was distributing information from a stall in the town center. A police officer was stabbed multiple times in the neck as he attempted to intervene. He later died. The attacker was shot dead at the scene.
Although the motivation for the fatal attack remains unclear, religion is likely to be the cause. Footage from social media showed Muslim immigrants celebrating the attack and threatening further attacks.
The death of the police officer prompted public protests demanding stricter immigration measures.
Political violence has been on the increase in Germany as campaigning for the EU elections takes place. On Wednesday, an Alternative for Germany (AfD) politician was stabbed by a political activist when he attempted to prevent him pulling down posters.
Knife crime in general has also soared with immigration to the country, hitting record levels last year. New statistics show that 60% of all violent crime is committed by foreigners, despite only making up 14% of the country’s population.
