An Afghan suspect who claimed he heard the “devil’s voice” has been arrested for the stabbing murder of an elderly restauranteur who helped him acclimate to life in Austria, according to reports.
The shocking incident unfolded this week in downtown Vienna.
On Thursday, authorities found the body of Hans S. inside his apartment after neighbors expressed concern about the man.
The victim, a 70-year-old Swiss citizen who ran a fondue and raclette restaurant in the city center for 17 years, had suffered “several massive stab wounds,” Blick reports.
Austrian police arrested a 26-year-old Afghan migrant on Friday.
The suspect previously lived with the victim, who reportedly welcomed him into his home in 2018 and helped him learn German and get a job.
In September, the Afghan moved out of the Swiss man’s residence.
A motive for the crime remains unclear, but the Afghan reportedly admitted to the killing, saying he had heard Satan’s voice in his head during a confusion confession.
Hans S. had just retired and was planning to move back to his homeland.
“Of course I will return to Switzerland, to my barn in the Bernese Oberland, where I have only been on vacation,” he reportedly told an Austrian publication earlier this year.
An investigation is ongoing.
