Around 7,000 individuals from countries with terrorism-related restrictions placed on them were allowed exemptions to enter the US in the last year, according to new figures released by the Department of Homeland Security.

Fox News was able to obtain a draft of a new DHS report to Congress that shows 6,653 “refugees” were exempted from terrorism-related inadmissibility grounds (TRIG) in FY 2024 by the Secretary of the DHS, Alejandro Mayorkas.

Foreign nationals can be deemed inadmissible to the US if they have associated with, supported or worked with terrorist organizations, but the Secretary of the DHS can give exemptions if individuals have provided support under coercion, given medical care or meet certain other criteria.

In 2022, for example, Afghan nationals who fled the Taliban were given exemptions if they worked as civil servants or if they provided “insignificant or certain limited material support.”

This year’s number is three times the 2,085 exemptions that were issued in FY 2023. Just over 600 exemptions were distributed in FY 2022, 191 in FY 2021, and 361 in FY 2020.

The figures do not include country-by-country breakdowns.

The Biden administration raised the refugee cap from 18,000, set during Donald Trump’s first term, to 125,000.

Former Trump DHS deputy assistant secretary and White House senior communications adviser Michael Bars spoke to Fox News and said of the new figures, “Joe Biden and his administration have viciously targeted parents at school board meetings, pro-life Americans, Catholics, and Trump supporters—designating some as ‘domestic terrorists’—instead of catching actual terrorists and keeping them out of the country. In fact, they’ve been helping potential threats move in, waiving national security safeguards to admit individuals who’ve provided varying degrees of material support to Islamic terrorist organizations in extraordinary numbers.”
“Islamic terrorism is not ‘homegrown,’” he added.

“It’s been imported to the U.S. through our broken immigration system and open border. The Biden administration has not only failed its duty to address this rising threat but precipitated it.”
