Police in Pennsylvania successfully nabbed escaped fugitive Danelo Cavalcante Wednesday, posing for photos with the bloodied convicted murderer as the 14-day saga wrapped up.
Video and photos show law enforcement search crews celebrating with Cavalcante in custody, posing with him for photos as a trophy of their successful capture, reminiscent of a big-game hunting expedition.
Police honed in on Cavalcante’s general whereabouts after a residents’ burglar alarm sounded shortly after midnight Wednesday morning.
More from the New York Times:
The final hours in the nearly two-week hunt for Danelo Cavalcante were set in motion by a late-night burglar alarm and culminated in a capture that took about five minutes, officials said on Wednesday morning.
Shortly after midnight on Wednesday, an alarm went off at a house inside an eight- to 10-square-mile perimeter that had been set by hundreds of officers in a wooded area of Chester County, said Lt. Col. George Bivens of the Pennsylvania State Police. Search teams found nothing when they responded to the alarm.
Search teams were able to locate Cavalcante hidden under dense brush with the aid of K-9s and aircraft that detected thermal emissions, as the search for the armed 34-year-old Brazilian national nearly stretched into its third week.
“Our nightmare is finally over, and the good guys won,” Chester County District Attorney Deb Ryan stated.
A manhunt for Cavalcante ensued after he crab-walked up two walls of the Chester County Prison to execute his escape.
Cavalcante was serving a life sentence for the murder of his former girlfriend Deborah Brandao, who he brutally killed by stabbing her 38 times in front of her two young children after she allegedly threatened to tell police about a murder he committed in his native country.
In the days leading up to his capture, the escaped prisoner also managed to get his hands on a firearm, stealing it from a local property where a homeowner fired a pistol at him.
Police did not indicate what other charges could be brought against Cavalcante, who would immediately resume serving his life sentence.
At a press conference following the capture, Pennsylvania State Police Lt. Col. George Bivens dismissed questions about police posing for photos with the dangerous criminal, saying, “Those men and women worked amazingly hard. They’re proud of their work. I’m not bothered at all.”
Cavalcante reportedly fled Brazil in 2017 after he allegedly killed a friend over a financial dispute, according to the Daily Mail.
