Republican South Dakota Governor Kristi Noem was confirmed as the Secretary of Homeland Security on Saturday by a vote of 59 to 34 in the Senate.
Noem’s confirmation was believed to have been one of the easier nominees to confirm to President Trump’s Cabinet.
The vote was mostly bipartisan and no Republicans voted against her.

The Senate also easily confirmed Marco Rubio as Secretary of State earlier this week.
But Pete Hegseth was confirmed as Defense Secretary with a razor-thin margin on Friday evening that required Vice President JD Vance to provide the tie-breaking vote.
Noem will now be tasked with overseeing Customs and Border Protection (CBP), the US Secret Service, and Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), and other agencies.
One of the agencies overseen by DHS is the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), which President Trump suggested Friday should be abolished.
“I think, frankly, FEMA is not good,” he said during a press conference after surveying North Carolina’s hurricane-ravaged areas, which have still not recovered four months after Hurricane Helene hit.

Among Noem’s other key directives is to facilitate Trump’s mass deportation operation along with border cszar Tom Homan.
“President Trump was elected with a clear mandate. He needs to achieve this mission because two-thirds of Americans support his immigration and border policies, including the majority of Hispanic Americans,” Noem said during her confirmation hearing this month.
ICE has already begun carrying out deportation raids, including one which scooped up a Haitian gang member who was taken away screaming “f–k Trump, Biden forever!”
