The Mayor of Newark, New Jersey, Ras Baraka, was arrested Friday after he allegedly attempted to storm an ICE detention facility, reports claim.

Footage shows Baraka among a large group appearing to attempt to enter the Delaney Hall migrant detention facility.

The mayor is later seen being escorted away from the scene in handcuffs by federal officers.

According to reports, Baraka and two Democrat US House reps were attempting to conduct an “oversight” visit at the detainment facility claiming they’d scheduled a tour.

However, in a statement following the incident Friday, the Department of Homeland Security denied any such tour was scheduled and accused the Democrats of attempting to “[storm] the gate” and “[break] into the detention facility”:

Today, as a bus of detainees was entering the security gate of Delaney Hall Detention Center, a group of protestors, including two members of the U.S. House of Representatives, stormed the gate and broke into the detention facility. Representatives Robert Menendez, Jr. and Bonnie Watson Coleman and multiple protestors are holed up in a guard shack, the first security check point.

“Members of Congress storming into a detention facility goes beyond a bizarre political stunt and puts the safety of our law enforcement agents and detainees at risk. Members of Congress are not above the law and cannot illegally break into detention facilities. Had these members requested a tour, we would have facilitated a tour of the facility. This is an evolving situation,” said Assistant Secretary Tricia McLaughlin.

On Friday afternoon, US Attorney for New Jersey Alina Habba gave an update on Baraka’s arrest, writing:

The Mayor of Newark, Ras Baraka, committed trespass and ignored multiple warnings from Homeland Security Investigations to remove himself from the ICE detention center in Newark, New Jersey this afternoon. He has willingly chosen to disregard the law. That will not stand in this state. He has been taken into custody. NO ONE IS ABOVE THE LAW.

The Newark mayor attended Friday’s protest despite his town’s airport making national headlines the same day after air traffic controllers’ radar screens at the Newark Airport suffered a second blackout in as many weeks, going dark for a minute and a half and causing major travel chaos.

The airport mishaps come as an air traffic control whistleblower came forward earlier this month warning travelers to avoid the Newark airport, saying, “It is not safe. It is not a safe situation right now for the flying public,” and adding, “Don’t fly into Newark. Avoid Newark at all costs.”

Perhaps the mayor should be more concerned with fixing his city’s crumbling infrastructure rather than virtue-signalling to try to score political points.
