Political strategist James Carville admitted that Democrats are “overwhelmed” by the pace of President Donald Trump’s fulfillment of his election promises and have not figured out how to successfully counter him.
During his “Politics War Room” podcast on Thursday, Carville referenced Trump advisor Steve Bannon’s quote from 2018 when he said, “the way to deal with [the media] is to flood the zone with sh*t.”
“Bannon is right. We are flooded in sh*t and we are searching for a way to deal with this. These are extraordinarily difficult times,” Carville told co-host Al Hunt.

“I’m struggling here a little bit, so maybe some of our really smart viewers can help us untangle it a little bit,” he said. “It’s really tangled now because no one knows where to land. It’s all too incomprehensible.”
Carville went on to express his dismay over Trump’s political resilience in the face of otherwise insurmountable obstacles that would have destroyed the political careers of other politicians, such as the Democrats’ coordinated lawfare.
“Things that we thought that would kill a political career, would be poisonous for whatever reason, this guy keeps chugging along,” Carville said.
Democrats like former presidential candidate Dean Phillips have likewise admitted that his colleagues are “getting steamrolled” by Trump and Elon Musk with his DOGE initiative.
“I think we’re missing the boat as Democrats. And all I’m saying is that sometimes it’s better to join them and actually play a role in how the strategy works rather than so pathetically, frankly, try to combat something that clearly is a steamroller, and Democrats are being steamrolled,” Phillips told CNN on Friday.

Democrat operative Scott Galloway on Thursday also mocked Democrat politicians over their anemic protests against DOGE outside the Treasury Department and Department of Education in Washington D.C. this week, saying it looked “more like a senior’s home on a canceled Jell-O night.”
“It just wasn’t optically a good moment for us,” he noted while leftist journalist Kara Swisher couldn’t help but laugh at the accurate description.
