Donald Trump may win not only the electoral college but also the popular vote, according to CNN’s Harry Enten.
In a clear sign of Trump’s surging popularity as the election campaign enters its final ten days, the CNN pundit admitted that Trump really could get his “great white whale” this time.
A Republican candidate hasn’t won the popular vote in 20 years, when George W. Bush beat John Kerry.
“Everyone has been talking about this idea that Trump may win in the Electoral College, but Kamala Harris may win the popular vote; but Trump may finally get his great white whale,” Enten told viewers.
This was something commentators and pollsters really didn’t think was possible, Enten said.
The pundit analyzed a variety of different data sources, including a New York Times poll that shows Trump and Harris are dead-even, and Wall Street Journal and CNBC polls that show Trump ahead.
Enten also compared how Trump’s opponents in the 2016 and 2020 presidential elections were faring at this final stage of the campaign. At this stage, Hillary Clinton was up 6 points on Trump and Biden was up 9 points. Kamala Harris, by contrast, is merely 1 point ahead—well within the margin of error—in an aggregate of national polls.
