The U.S. Coast Guard (USCG) repatriated nearly 170 Haitian citizens who were caught attempting to enter the country illegally by boat this week.
On Wednesday, USCG released details about an interdiction at sea and subsequent return of a large number of Haitians to their homeland.
Authorities in Turks and Caicos alerted USCG about an “overloaded vessel taking on water” at around 5 p.m. on Wednesday and Coast Guard Cutter Margaret Norvell was diverted to intercept the boat.
USCG Southeast shared photographs showing a horde of presumably Haitian males crammed aboard a makeshift vessel.

Following processing and medical examinations, 169 Haitians were transferred to Coast Guard Cutter Valiant and repatriated.
āThe development of tropical cyclones in the north Atlantic poses a significant risk toāÆunlawful maritime migration,ā said USCG Lt. Peter Hutchison.
“Makeshift vessels are unseaworthy and incapable of handling the rough seas and winds brought by inclement weather.ā
Last week, Border Patrol agents in Ramey Sector caught six illegal aliens from Syria, Cameroon, Ecuador, and Cuba at the Red Hook Ferry Terminal in St. Thomas.

In the weeks prior, dozens of illegals from various countries were intercepted throughout Ramey Sector, including 64 Haitians who were dumped by smugglers on Mona Island, Puerto Rico, on October 2.
