Cuba has announced it’s temporarily lifting restrictions on the amount of food, medicine and hygiene products travelers can bring into the country.

Custom duties on these products won’t need to be paid and the relaxed measures will last for the rest of the year.

The move has been acknowledged by officials as a small concession to the demands of the anti-government protesters.

“It was a demand made by many travelers and it was necessary to take this decision,” said Prime Minister Manuel Marrero Wednesday during a state television roundtable with President Miguel Diaz-Canel.

Marrero specified the measures allow “Cuban citizens who go on foreign trips to bring home toiletries, food and medicines, which are among the most hard to find items in Cuba.”

Regarding why such basic items are hard to find on the island nation, White House Press Secretary Jen Psaki recently recieved major blowback after downplaying communism’s role for Cuba’s current condition.

Today, she clarified her stance.

“Communism is a failed ideology, and we certainly believe that,” said Psaki. “it has failed the people of Cuba.”

“They deserve freedom.”
