A human smuggling ring believed to be responsible for moving more than 1,000 migrants into Europe via Turkey was broken up by Czech authorities this week, according to reports.

Czech police carried out raids in multiple locations around the country over the span of days, arresting at least 14 suspects.

The group has been under surveillance since 2021 and is believed to have smuggled hundreds of migrants into Western Europe since that time.

“The migrants have been using the Czech Republic as a transit route on their way to the West, officials said, and mostly do not apply for asylum in Czechia, as the country is also known,” the Associated Press reports.

Czech authorities say they have been building cases against the suspects, who now face up to 16 years each if convicted.

“One Czech citizen and 13 foreigners helped at least a thousand migrants cross the border illegally,” Jaroslav Ibehej, spokesman for the National Central Office Against Organized Crime, told Czech media.

The group reportedly collected more than $1 million in earnings since 2021, with migrants paying up to $22,000 per person to be smuggled into Europe.

Legal proceedings are ongoing.
