The mayor of San Jose, California, is being criticized as a hypocrite for telling residents to avoid Thanksgiving gatherings due to COVID-19, while he himself enjoyed dinner with his family.

On Tuesday, Democrat Mayor Sam Liccardo released an apology after local media caught him ignoring his own safety guidelines to spend the holiday with his elderly parents and an undisclosed number of guests.

“On Thanksgiving afternoon, my wife Jessica and I attended my parent’s house for an outdoor dinner on their backyard patio, along with my sister-in-law,” admitted Mayor Liccardo Tuesday.

In his apology, Liccardo professed his family observed social distancing guidelines, claiming family members “dined separately” and “sat around three distanced tables in our own family groups on the back patio, and we wore masks without eating.”

“I understand that the state regulations, issued on November 13th, limit the number of households at a private gathering to three,” read Liccardo’s statement. “I apologize for my decision to gather for Thanksgiving with my family, contrary to the rules. I understand my obligation as a public official to provide exemplary compliance w/ public health orders, & not to ignore them. I commit to do better.”

The mayor’s illegal gathering came mere days after he told residents to “cancel the big gatherings this year.”

“Cases are spiking, in part because we’re letting our guard (and masks) down with family & friends,” Liccardo warned in a tweet last Wednesday, adding, “Let’s cancel the big gatherings this year and focus on keeping each other safe.”

The mayor isn’t the only high-profile California Democrat caught skirting his own Covid rules.

Last month, the Governor Gavin Newsom was spotted dining with a large group of people including California Medical Association officials at a French restaurant in Napa, undermining the state’s health protocols.

“The group featured people from several households, and was certainly above the state guidelines, which limit gatherings to no more than three households,” reported Fox 11.

The next day, the Democrat mayor of San Francisco, London Breed, reportedly dined at the same restaurant as Newsom, days after encouraging San Franiscans to “do their part so that we can start moving in the right direction again.”
