Hurricane Helene, now downgraded to a tropical storm from a category 4 hurricane by the National Hurricane Center, made landfall in the Western region of Florida on Thursday causing a massive storm surge, deep flooding and widespread power outages. Residents of the affected areas posted dramatic videos to social media of the carnage that ensued.

At the time of this writing, over 1 million customers are without power in Florida, over 1 million more in Georgia are without power as well as over 1 million in South Carolina and over a half million in North Carolina. Other neighboring states are also being affected.

The storm is expected to continue weakening as it stays over land, according to the National Hurricane Center on Friday.

One dramatic video shows flooded homes on fire as the Sheriff’s Department and first responders float by on a small boat looking for residents in need of rescue.

Another shocking video shows a Tampa man calmly floating in a small boat inside his house, with the power still on.

“But at least I’m not electrocuting myself anymore,” he said. “We got the chlorine going…trying to disinfect some of this nastiness. Florida things. Florida man doing Florida things.”

High winds have damaged buildings which were then flooded.

The sheer veracity of the winds can best be seen in clips like these.

Some have captured drone footage of the incident.

Security cameras capture the moment when the storm surge enters a home.

Power lines can be seen arcing in the midst of the tempest.

Heavy flooding has inundated some areas.

One man recorded a video near the eye of the storm (the most violent part of the storm). He reported that the rain drops were moving so fast in the wind that they were stinging his face.

Homes have been lifted from their foundations and washed away in the floods.

This area experienced a 16 foot storm surge.

Georgia is sustaining flooding as well.

Other clips show flooding in North Carolina.

High winds have lifted parts of homes into the air.

The storm surge is seen inundating coastal areas.

Arcing in power lines were captured on camera at a flooded apartment complex.

Other videos show the devastation of the storm after it’s receded from the area.

Search and rescue operations are now underway.

Interestingly, another hurricane, John, has made landfall in Western Mexico during Hurricane Helene’s U.S. landfall.
