Due to Mineral Deal, Trump Initiates New Round of Ukraine Peace Talks

On Thursday Trump said that ideally Ukraine will enter a 30-day ceasefire and if that ceasefire is not honored he will apply more sanctions.

“We are getting to a point where some decisions are going to have to be made,” the President said Wednesday. “I’m not happy about it … I’m not happy about it.”

On Thursday President Donald Trump announced he will be speaking to Ukrainian Dictator Vladimir Zelensky again. Although no date or time has been given for the upcoming discussions the President did say “very soon“. Recently the White House has said it’s ready to walk away from the negotiations if Moscow and Kiev fail to finalize a peace plan. Ukraine’s parliament signing the mineral deal into law on Thursday appears to have triggered a renewed interest in these diplomatic activities.

“Talks with Russia/Ukraine continue,” Trump said in a social media post Thursday afternoon. “The U.S. calls for, ideally, a 30-day unconditional ceasefire. Hopefully, an acceptable ceasefire will be observed, and both Countries will be held accountable for respecting the sanctity of these direct negotiations. If the ceasefire is not respected, the U.S. and its partners will impose further sanctions. Thousands of young soldiers are dying on a weekly basis, and everybody should want it to STOP. I do, and the United States of America does, also. As President, I will stay committed to securing Peace between Russia and Ukraine, together with the Europeans, and a Lasting Peace it will be! This ceasefire must ultimately build toward a Peace Agreement. It can all be done very quickly, and I will be available on a moment’s notice if my services are needed. Thank you for your attention to this matter!”

Before the social media post, the President told reporters in the White House that talks with Ukraine’s Dictator are set to take place.

“We just concluded the rare earth deal with Ukraine,” Trump said. “We appreciate that and I’ll be speaking with [Zelensky] in a little while.”

On Wednesday Vice President JD Vance said that Moscow is asking too much from Ukraine as part of a ceasefire agreement.

“I wouldn’t say that the Russians are uninterested in bringing this thing to a resolution,” Vance said during an onstage interview with the Munich security council president, Wolfgang Ischinger. “What I would say is, right now, the Russians are asking for a certain set of requirements, a certain set of concessions in order to end the conflict. We think they’re asking for too much. OK?”

Perhaps more interesting are statements made by Trump on Wednesday.

“We are getting to a point where some decisions are going to have to be made,” the President said. “I’m not happy about it … I’m not happy about it.”

On Tuesday Keith Kellogg, Washington’s special envoy to Ukraine, told Fox News that Kiev has agreed to a 30-kilometer-wide demilitarized zone along the line of contact, the ‘front lines’ of the war. The U.S. official also said that Ukraine’s battle lines are in a “good place” and that it is time for a ceasefire agreement.

On Wednesday Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov told the media that Moscow has yet to receive this agreement from Kiev, indicating that the announcement was only made by Washington – a third party to the matter.

“There have been no relevant statements by Kiev on the issue,” Peskov told the news agency.
