A father was acting to protect his family when he fatally shot a home invader who grabbed his young daughter this week in North Carolina, authorities say.

The harrowing incident unfolded at around 9 p.m. on Sunday night in Wilson’s Mills, a town in Johnston County near Raleigh.

Children were playing in the backyard of a home on Father’s Day when a man suddenly entered the property and accosted an 11-year-old girl.

The suspect then chased the other kids as they fled into the house to alert adults.

“Police said the suspect attempted to follow the children into the residence by pulling on the back door handle and shaking it violently,” according to the Johnston County Report.

“The homeowner and father shot the 23-year-old suspect who died from his injuries.”

The suspect was unknown to the family prior to the attack, Police Chief A.Z. Williams told local media.

Williams says it was one of the only violent crimes he recalls happening during the past five years in the town.

An investigation is being handled by the Johnston County Sheriff’s Office.
