Private businesses will be the main drivers of vaccine passports instead of the federal government, according to Dr. Anthony Fauci.
The National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases head expects “individual entities” like restaurants, theaters, universities, and sports arenas to “take the lead” on such vaccine policies, The Hill reports.
“I doubt that the federal government will be the main mover of a vaccine passport concept,” Fauci told the Politico Dispatch podcast on Monday. “They may be involved in making sure things are done fairly and equitably, but I doubt if the federal government is gonna be the leading element of that.”
“I’m not saying that they should or that they would, but I’m saying you could foresee how an independent entity might say, ‘Well, we can’t be dealing with you unless we know you’re vaccinated.’”
Fauci concluded, “But it’s not going to be mandated from the federal government.”
Just last week, Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis (R) signed an executive order banning vaccine passports in his state and warned against the creation of “classes of citizens based on vaccinations.”
“Requiring so-called COVID-19 vaccine passports for taking part in everyday life – such as attending a sporting event, patronizing a restaurant, or going to a movie theater – would create two classes of citizens based on vaccinations,” said DeSantis. “It is necessary to protect the fundamental rights and privacies of Floridians and free flow of commerce in the state.”
Recently, a Rasmussen poll revealed that 44% of Americans believe a government-run system requiring proof of vaccination is a “good idea.”
