The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) has put forth disturbingly conflicting messaging regarding a potential terrorist attack on New Year’s Day that left at least 10 dead and dozens more wounded in New Orleans.
Just after 3 a.m., a male driver plowed through crowds at the intersection of Bourbon and Canal Streets in a pickup truck before exiting the vehicle and opening fire on survivors, according to reports.
The suspect was killed in a shootout with police, but not before he wounded at least two officers.
“This man was trying to run over as many people as he could,” New Orleans Police Chief Anne Kirkpatrick explained during a press conference on Wednesday. “He was hell-bent on creating the carnage and the damage that he did.”
During the same presser, New Orleans Mayor LaToya Cantrell stated that her city had been targeted in a “terrorist attack.”
However, moments after both women made those assertions, Alethea Duncan, assistant special agent in charge of the FBI’s New Orleans field office, stepped up to the mic to decisively declare, “This is not a terrorist event.”
“What it is right now, is there are improvised explosive devices that was found, and we are working on confirming if it’s a viable device or not,” she continued.

Minutes later during the same press conference…

Hours later, the FBI released an official statement directly contradicting that of Special Agent Duncan.
“This morning, an individual drove a car into a crowd of people on Bourbon Street in New Orleans, killing a number of people and injuring dozens of others. The subject then engaged with local law enforcement and is now deceased. The FBI is the lead investigative agency, and we are working with our partners to investigate this as an act of terrorism,” the agency said.
