The FBI under the direction of Director Kash Patel is investigating an off-the-books operation launched by former FBI Director James Comey to deploy female undercover “honeypot” agents to infiltrate Donald Trump’s 2016 presidential campaign.
A bureau whistleblower in October disclosed to the House Judiciary Committee that Comey “personally directed” the honeypot operation, designated as part of a “criminal investigation,” against the Trump campaign in 2015, The Washington Times reported.
A honeypot usually refers to an undercover operative — usually a woman — who feigns sexual or romantic interest to extract information from a target.

The honeypot operation was separate from the FBI’s Crossfire Hurricane investigation that tried to substantiate now-debunked allegations that then-candidate Donald Trump had “colluded” with Russia to win the 2016 election.
From The Washington Times:
According to the whistleblower, two female FBI undercover employees infiltrated Mr. Trump’s 2016 campaign at high levels and were directed to act as “honeypots” while traveling with Mr. Trump and his campaign staff.
The Times has learned that the bureau, now led by Director Kash Patel and Deputy Director Dan Bongino, is looking for those once-undercover employees who were previously under Mr. Comey’s direction.
The FBI declined to comment.
The whistleblower claimed the FBI obscured the probe from Justice Department Inspector General Michael Horowitz since it essentially amounted to a “fishing expedition.”
“The case had no predicated foundation, so Comey personally directed the investigation without creating an official case file in Sentinel or any other FBI system,” according to the whistleblower’s disclosure. “The FBI has multiple methods of protecting highly sensitive investigations, so Comey did not have a legitimate reason not to officially create an official investigation file or have a file number.”
According to the whistleblower, the two undercover FBI employees who served as the honeypot traps were transferred to the CIA and promoted to a senior position at the FBI, respectively.
The investigation was eventually closed because a major newspaper obtained a photograph of one of the undercovers and was about to publish it, but the FBI press office told the outlet that the photograph was an FBI informant who would be killed if the photograph was publicly released.
In fact, it was a photograph of the FBI undercover employee.
The FBI whistleblower employee noted in the disclosure that one of the undercovers agreed to be transferred to the CIA so she would not be available as a potential witness.
The other undercover employee was rewarded for her activities through a promotion in the bureau and is now a high-level FBI executive in a major field office.
This comes just days after Kash Patel, a vocal critic of the FBI’s weaponization against Trump, was sworn in as FBI Director.
These revelations may explain in part why Comey was so freaked out over the prospect of Donald Trump retaking the White House.
“Trump is coming for those institutions. He knows their power and I think he has regrets that he didn’t work hard enough to corrupt them last time,” Comey said on MSNBC in May 2024.

“So he’s coming for them and that’s a danger for all Americans. He’s gonna put people in positions in those organizations,” he added.
