Shayne Coplan, CEO of the betting market Polymarket, had his phone and electronic devices seized by FBI agents on Wednesday morning just a week after Donald Trump won the 2024 presidential election, as predicted by the website.
According to the New York Post, “The 26-year-old entrepreneur was woken up at 6:00 a.m. in his Soho home by law US enforcement officers who demanded his phone and electronics, a source close to the matter told The Post.”
A source told the outlet the raid was part of a “grand political theater” intended to create a media frenzy, saying, “They could have asked his lawyer for any of these things. Instead, they staged a so-called raid so they can leak it to the media and use it for obvious political reasons.”
“This is obvious political retribution by the outgoing administration against Polymarket for providing a market that correctly called the 2024 presidential election,” the source added.
While Coplan was not arrested, he could eventually be charged if the feds “find” anything in the raid.
The FBI did not answer a request for comment by the New York Post.
