A female collegiate swimmer penned a letter slamming the NCAA’s rules on allowing transgender athletes to compete against women after she was edged out of the finals by male UPenn opponent Lia Thomas.
In her letter, Hungarian-born Virginia Tech swimmer Reka Gyorgy explained she missed a finals spot by one place, and blasted the NCAA’s rules on transgender athletes as “disrespectful” to female swimmers.
“With all due respect, I would like to address something that is a problem in our sport right now and hurting athletes, especially female swimmers,” Gyorgy wrote to the NCAA, going on to acknowledge Thomas makes the same efforts and sacrifices as female swimmers.
“She is doing what is passionate about and deserves that right,” Gyorgy wrote, referring to Thomas as a female.
“On the other hand, I would like to critique the NCAA rules that allow her to compete against us, who are biologically women,” she wrote, adding she “hopes that the NCAA will open their eyes and change these rules in the future.”
“It doesn’t promote our sport in a good way and I think it is disrespectful against the biologically female swimmers who are competing in the NCAA.”
Gyorgy went on to describe how she felt her finals spot was “taken away” during her last swim meet ever, missing it only by one place all because the collegiate sports authority unfairly allowed males to compete against females.
“I swam the 500 free at NCAA’s on March 17th 2022 where I got 17th which means I didn’t make it back to the finals and was first alternative. I’m a 5th year senior, I have been top 16 and top 8 before and I know how much of a privilege it is to make finals at a meet this big.”
“This is my last college meet ever and I feel frustrated. It feels like that final spot was taken away from me because of the NCAA’s decision to let someone who is not a biological female compete. I know you could say I had the opportunity to swim faster and make the top 16, but this situation makes it a bit different and I can’t help but be angry or sad.”
“It hurts me, my team and the other women in the pool.”
Gyorgy highlighted the story of another female swimmer who missed earning the “All-American” title after she was similarly taken out by Thomas.
“One spot was taken away from the girl who got 9th in the 500 free and didn’t make it back to the A final preventing her from being an All-American. Every event that transgender athletes competed in was one spot away from biological females throughout the meet.”
Gyorgy concluded the NCAA is not interested in protecting female athletes and pleaded with the organization to “make the right changes for our sport and for a better future in swimming.”
The NCAA has notably taken flak from transgender Olympian Caitlyn Jenner, who criticized the organization’s rules as unfair to women.
“I don’t think biological boys should compete in women’s sports – we have to protect women’s sports,” the athlete formerly known as Bruce Jenner told Fox News. “That’s the bottom line.”
Jenner claimed Thomas “was taking it easy” so as not to break Olympian Katie Ledecky’s world record in the 500-yard freestyle.
“Lia Thomas just dominated in the pool, and I’m sure she took it quite easily because she did not want to win by too much,” Jenner claimed.
“I think she was probably taking it very easy in the race because she knew the world was watching, and she’s just going to go fast enough to be able to win the race.”
Meanwhile, the NCAA is poised to enact a rule change next season that would require transgender athletes to “undergo three years of suppressing testosterone in order to compete against biological women,” according to the Daily Mail.
