Only a week after lame duck Joe Biden sent $2.5 billion to Ukraine, the 82-year-old great grandfather announced Thursday that a $500 million military aid package will be given to the Eastern European country as part of a security package.
While last week’s gift to Ukraine was called ‘security assistance’, this week’s gift is called an ‘aid package’. The $500 million package leaves about $3.85 billion in funding for future gifts of weapons to Ukraine. If Biden stops sending these to Ukraine, that balance will be available to Trump to send if he so chooses.
The announcement was made at Ramstein Air Base in Germany by Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin who was meeting with Vladimir Zelensky.
The new aid package includes missiles for fighter jets, support equipment for F-16s, armored bridging systems, small arms and ammunition and other spare parts and communications equipment. Interestingly these weapons will be given up by the U.S. and transferred to the foreign country.
“The weapons package is funded by the presidential drawdown authority (PDA), meaning the weapons will come from U.S. stockpiles, expediting their delivery to Ukraine,” Fox News said Thursday.
The Council on Foreign Relations reported in September that between February 2022 and April 2024 the U.S. gifted Ukraine $175 billion and Fox News reported Thursday that the U.S. provided about $66 billion of total ‘aid’ since February 2022.
