A Syrian migrant was arrested during a fiery rampage in Germany that left 31 people injured, many of them children, according to reports.
The shocking string of events unfolded just after 5 p.m. in Essen, a city in North Rhine-Westphalia.
The 41-year-old suspect first set fire to a residential building in the Essen-Altenessen neighborhood before racing onward in a cargo van to start a blaze at another apartment building, BILD reports.
The Syrian then used his vehicle to ram the facade of a produce market several times.
He then crashed into another shop before exiting the van brandishing a large combat knife in one hand and a machete in the other.
Witness footage indicates the Syrian was wearing a keffiyeh (Islamic headcloth), a Palestinian flag, and other accessories bearing Palestinian flag colors.
