A GOP lawmaker who voted to impeach President Trump in February is “dismayed” that conservatives are disrespecting the FBI by believing the Capitol protest on January 6 was a “false flag” operation.
Rep. Brian Fitzpatrick (R-Pa.), a former FBI agent himself, joined CNN’s “State of the Union” on Sunday to come to the defense of the bureau he had worked for for 14 years.
“I will tell you, being a lifelong FBI agent, I will tell you starting in New York, ending in LA and serving across the globe when I got sworn into Congress in 2017, I’ve been very, very taken back and dismayed at the disrespect that law enforcement is being given across the board, both on the left and the right, quite frankly,” Fitzpatrick told host Dana Bash.
“On the left with local police and on right with the FBI in fact, just this week, the FBI got attacked twice, once from my Democratic colleagues on the intel committee on which I sit and later by my colleagues on the right who are coming up with this theory that somehow FBI is behind January 6th, which is incredibly irresponsible.”
“Anybody who understands the criminal code knows that a federal agent cannot engage in a conspiracy, because they’re acting within the scope of their employment. So the facts don’t even follow. I think the rhetoric is dangerous, and it has to stop.”
Wow, a former FBI agent insisting the FBI does nothing wrong? Guess that settles it.
But wait, turns out the FBI did in fact infiltrate right-wing groups ahead of the Capitol protest and engage in violence, and have a long and storied history of entrapment and false flags.
It’s unsurprising to see a former FBI agent shill for the bureau he worked for with zero pushback from CNN.
As independent journalist Glenn Greenwald noted on Friday, news networks have become vassals for the national security state, frequently bringing on former intelligence officials as analysts or guests to defend the status quo.
“The vast majority of times you’ve heard the FBI applauding itself for having stopped a terrorist plot domestically was actually a plot that they themselves governed and directed with informants and with operatives exactly of the type that we know for certain they put into the Proud Boys and the 3 Percenters,” Greenwald said on “Tucker Carlson Tonight.”
“So the only way you could claim this is some kind of a crazy conspiracy theory is if either you’re completely ignorant about what the FBI does, or lying on purpose to cover up what the FBI does when it acts domestically.”
“During the Trump years, the CIA and the FBI became overwhelmingly popular among American liberals,” Greenwald continued.
“They worshipped the FBI and the CIA because they viewed it as the bulwark against Trump. So if you’re serving a liberal audience, the last thing you know your audience wants to hear…is anything that is questioning of or critical of the FBI on top of which all these news outlets are filled on their payroll with former operatives of the FBI and CIA,” he added.
Given Fitzpatrick has been in the FBI for 14 years, it’s doubtful that he’s ignorant of the inner workings of FBI operations.
Additionally, given he voted to impeach Trump based on the false insurrection narrative, it behooves Fitzpatrick to defend the FBI’s actions because to do otherwise would be an admission that Trump’s impeachment was pure politics.
