LGBTQ organizers held the city’s 33rd annual Pride festival over the weekend despite “Pride Month” ending 43 days ago, which organizers claim is meant to avoid competition and bring in more visitors.
This grooming event comes as Texas lawmakers passed laws prohibiting radical gender treatments and hormones for minors.
“I think this is just an opportunity for people to gather and experience joy because it’s been a really heavy, heavy year,” Ricardo Martinez, executive director of Equality Texas, told Fox 7 Austin.
Austin school districts also encouraged children and families to wear “pride costumes” in support of the “drag community” during the parade.
“From attacks on our Drag community to the fight for trans rights… sometimes it feels that our community is getting pushed from all sides. When that happens, WE STAND OUR GROUND! And no matter what, one thing is for certain. We will KEEP AUSTIN QUEER’D!” the Austin pride website wrote.
