A popular gun safe company is being criticized after it turned over the access code of a safe owned by an alleged Jan. 6 rioter to the FBI.
On Monday, conservative commentators the Hodge Twins shared news of Jan. 6 suspect Nathan Hughes’ arrest last week, relaying that he was arrested by the FBI at gunpoint and that they obtained access to his gun safe via the manufacturer Liberty Safe.
In their post, the Hodge Twins wrote:
Last week, a friend of ours was raided by the feds over J6, his name is Nathan Hughes and he’s from Fayetteville, Arkansas. Nate was raided by the FBI and arrested at gun point. His girlfriend (who just had a miscarriage) was held at gun point and put in handcuffs. The FBI turned off his security cameras, unplugged his internet, and flipped his house upside down in a search. The feds called the manufacturer of his Liberty Gun Safe and got the passcode to get into it too. All for protesting at the Capitol over 2 1/2 years ago.
Liberty Safe, which describes itself as “America’s #1 heavy-duty home and gun safe manufacturer,” issued a response Tuesday evening defending their decision.
“On Aug 30, 2023 Liberty Safe was contacted by the FBI requesting the access code to the safe of an individual for whom they had a warrant to search their property,” the statement reads.
“Our company protocol is to provide access codes to law enforcement if a warrant grants them access to a property. After receiving the request, we received proof of the valid warrant and only then did we provide them with an access code. Liberty Safe had no knowledge of any of the details surrounding the investigation at the time.”
Liberty Safe went on to say they’re “devoted to protecting the personal property and 2nd amendment rights of our customers,” and claimed they’ve “repeatedly denied requests for access codes without a warrant in the past.”
Despite attempts to explain their position, Liberty Safe was picked apart on the social media platform X (formerly Twitter), where users called for boycotts against the “traitorous” company, with many drawing parallels to the recent Bud Light controversy.
Enjoy bankruptcy, traitors

Maybe change your name to “Tyranny Safes”
It fits you better.

You have failed. There should be no back door to a safe. Welcome to bud light.

Others pointed out the wording of the company’s statement implied it was merely an FBI “request” with which they were not required to comply, in addition to the fact the warrant would have been for Hughes, not the company.
Hey “Liberty” Safe!
Get FUCKED
You outed yourself with your statement, you said the FBI “requested”
It wasn’t even a legal demand
I will never buy a safe from you guys.

Comments on their post were so negative, Liberty Safe later limited replies to only people they followed, but the damage was already done.
They finally shut replies off.
This company is going under.
Totally betrayed customer base. It’s impossible to earn back that trust. They had a moral duty to protect customers, and instead placated feds through a secret back door. Ugly, ugly stuff. https://t.co/xUtoH2IiaZ

Podcaster Tim Pool remarked it was insane the company had backdoor access to its safes in the first place.
The Hodge Twins later highlighted Liberty Safe actually requires customers call a certified locksmith if they need access to the passcode for the safe, “But if the Feds want in your safe, they’ll immediately send them your code.”
According to the Hodge Twins, Hughes is “being charged with crimes related to January 6th.”
“He didn’t assault anyone and he didn’t vandalize anything. He is being labeled a domestic terrorist and a traitor to his country by woke leftists and the media,” they added.
Time will tell if Liberty Safes is built strong enough to withstand the onslaught of negative publicity sparked by the company’s questionable actions.
