New Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth has outlined his top priorities for the American military after being sworn in by Vice President JD Vance on Saturday.

“It is the privilege of a lifetime to lead the warriors of the Department of Defense,” Hegseth said in a statement.

“We will put America First, and we will never back down.”

Hegseth identified three ways to improve America’s military capabilities in line with President Trump’s vision of achieving “peace through strength”: “restoring the warrior ethos, rebuilding our military, and reestablishing deterrence.”

To restore the warrior ethos, the military must build a sense of unity and shared purpose.

To rebuild the military, its capabilities must be better aligned with the threats America faces, its industrial base must be rebuilt, it must be financially accountable and it must be able to deploy emerging technologies rapidly on the battlefield.

“We will remain the strongest and most lethal force in the world,” Hegseth said.

Finally, to reestablish deterrence, the government must bolster homeland defense and also work with allies to counter longstanding and emerging threats. Hegseth mentioned China specifically.

“We will work with allies and partners to deter aggression in the Indo-Pacific by communist China, as well as supporting the President’s priority to end wars responsibly and reorient to key threats,” Hegseth said.

Hegseth said key priorities will be “lethality, meritocracy, accountability, standards, and readiness.”

“Our enemies will neither rest nor relent. And neither will we. We will stand shoulder to shoulder to meet the urgency of this moment,” he said. “Together we will accomplish the President’s mission to deter war, and if necessary, defeat and destroy our enemies.”

Hegseth was confirmed with a tie-breaker vote from JD Vance during his confirmation session on Friday. It was only the second time in American history that a vice president has intervened to decide a vote.
