Hollywood has cast “bald-headed, black and queer” Wicked actress Cynthia Erivo to play Christ in the musical hit Jesus Christ Superstar.
Erivo will reprise the role of Jesus Christ for the musical Jesus Christ Superstar at the Hollywood Bowl in August — part of the 2025 season lineup announced Tuesday by the Los Angeles Philharmonic.

From the Hollywood Bowl website:
A global phenomenon that has wowed audiences for decades, Jesus Christ Superstar is a timeless work that explores the biblical portrayal of the extraordinary events that led to the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ as seen through the eyes of his betrayer, Judas Iscariot. The story, told entirely through song, explores the personal relationships and struggles between Jesus, Judas, Mary Magdalene, Jesus’ disciples, his followers and the Roman Empire. Originally released as a concept album, the iconic 1970s rock score contains such well-known numbers as “Superstar,” “I Don’t Know How to Love Him,” and “Gethsemane.”
This brand-new production sees Jesus Christ Superstar returning to its rock roots and features lyrics by Tim Rice and music by Andrew Lloyd Webber, with Tony Award winner Sergio Trujillo as director and choreographer and Tony winner Stephen Oremus as musical director and conductor.
This marks the first Hollywood Bowl event since its hiatus from the COVID-19 plandemic.
“We missed the musicals for a few years, and I think that one is a good one to return with,” said L.A. Philharmonic President and Chief Executive Kim Noltemy. “Whether it be staffing or psychological transition, we needed time to get back up to running like the machine we can be when everything’s going well.”
Erivo was nominated for an Oscar for her lead performance as Elphaba, the green-faced Wicked Witch of the West in the motion picture musical Wicked.

Erivo, an outspoken member of the LGBT community, said at a gala for the Los Angeles LGBT Center last year, “As I stand here in front of you: black, bald-headed, pierced, and queer, I can say I know a thing or two about being the other.”
This eyebrow-raising casting decision is taking the left’s “DEI hire” push to the next absurd level.
Perhaps Hollywood can pick Rosie O’Donnell to play Martin Luther King, Jr. in the next biographical film of the black civil rights leader.
