The incoming Trump administration will bring back workplace raids for illegal immigrants and reinstate the “remain in Mexico” policy, according to Border Czar Tom Homan.
Homan was talking to The Washington Post when he outlined Trump’s plans for enforcing his much-vaunted policy of mass deportations. Trump has promised “the largest mass deportation operation in American history.”
“We haven’t really worked out the plan for worksite enforcement,” Homan said.
“We know that employers are going to be upset.”
The Biden administration stripped ICE of its ability to raid workplaces in February 2021, and also ended the “remain in Mexico” policy on Biden’s first day in office.
The “remain in Mexico” policy was instituted to ensure that migrants are not released into the US while they await immigration hearings.
Homan also said the Trump administration will construct facilities to hold adult migrants with children they arrive at the border with.
Trump’s Border Czar also emphasised the need to ensure the American people remain supportive of Trump’s immigration policies.
“We need to show the American people we can do this and not be inhumane about it. We can’t lose the faith of the American people.”
Over the last week, it was announced that the Mexican government is working to frustrate president-elect Donald Trump’s deportation program, through a new cellphone app.
The cellphone app, which is being developed by the Mexican government, will allow migrants to inform family members and local consulates if they think they are about to be detained in the US.
The app will be available in January, in time for president-elect Donald Trump’s inauguration, on 20 January. Trump has pledged to begin the “largest mass deportation operation in American history” on day one of his new term.
In a press release, Mexico’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs said the app will alert the “consulate closest to their location about situations of imminent detention, notify family members who have previously been selected, as well as report to the Foreign Affairs Secretary.”
“The foreign affairs secretary was emphatic in pointing out that to deport someone from the United States you need a court order, a final sentence of deportation or removal, and that is where the consular team will be very aware that due process is complied with,” the press release continued.
Mexico’s Foreign Affairs Secretary, Juan Ramon de le Fuente, has stated that the country will use international law to defend the rights of its citizens.
“In case you find yourself in a situation where detention is imminent, you push the alert button and that sends a signal to the nearest consulate,” he said.
“We want to tell our fellow countrymen that they are not alone and they will not be alone.”
