Donald Trump’s Secret Service detail is to be beefed up after the House of Representatives passed a new bill on Friday.
The bill, which will increase Secret Service protections for presidential candidates, passed in a rare unanimous display of bipartisan support. The vote went 405-0.
If the bill is now passed by the Senate, it would mandate a large-scale review of Secret Service protective standards and ensure uniform protection to ensure the security of presidents, vice presidents and presidential candidates.
“Regardless of how every American feels, regardless of how every American intends to vote, it is the right of the American people to determine the outcome of this election, Rep. Mike Lawler, co-sponsor of the bill said.
“The idea that our election could be decided by an assassin’s bullet should shake the conscience of our nation, and it requires swift action by the federal government. It is shocking that it took a second assassination attempt for Donald Trump to get the same level of protective detail from the Secret Service as the president of the United States.”
Former president Donald Trump has now survived two assassination attempts in as many months. The first took place on 13 July, when Thomas Matthew Crooks attempted to shoot Trump from a rooftop during a rally in Butler, Pennsylvania. Crooks was shot dead after firing multiple rounds at Trump, injuring him and killing a bystander, Corey Comperatore, who was hit by stray bullets while protecting his family.
The second attempt took place last weekend, when Ryan Routh positioned himself on Trump’s golf course while Trump was playing with a friend. Routh was discovered by Secret Service agents and apprehended after fleeing the scene. Routh had an SKS rifle and a GoPro camera, suggesting he intended to film the attack.
