Spanish energy minister Teresa Ribera was caught exiting a limousine and mounting a bicycle to ride into a European Union climate change summit, following her initial arrival by private jet.

Footage of Ribera’s ridiculous PR stunt went viral Monday showing her riding into the climate conference escorted by two gasoline-powered security vehicles.

“Teresa Ribera’s thing about making you arrive by bicycle at a climate summit, traveling barely a hundred meters, escorted by two armored gasoline cars is another of the images that perfectly define this government,” wrote one Twitter user.

Indian news site Times Now News confirmed Ribera arrived to the conference in Valladolid, Spain, via carbon-spewing private jet.

“As per the information available to us, the minister travelled for the EU’s Climate Summit via a jet,” Times Now News reported. “It has been revealed that the minister arrived at the venue in chauffeured cars but 100 meters before arriving, the minister got down and rode a bike to the venue.”

The irony is Ribera was taking part in discussions in support of a European Commission proposal for a law to “restore damaged environments,” which groups opposing the project have said could jeopardize food security.

“It is very important not only to conserve but also to restore nature… There will be time to improve what we have on the table but for the time being, the best thing we can do is to achieve an agreement,” Ribera said Monday.

More on the climate meeting via Reuters:

The European Union environment commissioner and Spain’s energy minister increased pressure on European lawmakers on Monday to support a flagship law to restore nature so that negotiations among the bloc’s institutions can start.

The European Parliament will vote on Wednesday on a European Commission proposal for a law to restore damaged environments.

The vote is expected to be close. The parliament’s largest group, the conservative European People’s Party, opposes it, saying that it would threaten food security. That claim was rejected by the European Commission and scientists.

As usual, the lawmakers responsible for establishing climate regulations to which the rest of the public must adhere have no problem being hypocritical, but their “rules for thee not me” attitude does not escape the scrutiny of social media.
