A Brazilian fugitive who has been on the loose for months after entering the U.S. legally has been arrested, authorities say.

On Friday, Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) announced the apprehension of the 55-year-old foreign national at his residence in Fall River, Massachusetts.

The Brazilian legally entered the country on April 26 in Detroit, Michigan, some six months after he was convicted of rape in his home country and sentenced to more than 10 years in prison.

ICE says the man violated the terms of lawful admission, but did not explain how.

Enforcement and Removal Operations (ERO) officers tracked the absconder down on July 31 and took him into custody.

He was served with a notice to appear before a federal immigration judge and remains in ICE custody pending removal from the U.S.

“This Brazilian fugitive attempted to flee justice in his home country and hide out in Massachusetts,” ERO Boston Field Office Director Todd M. Lyons stated.

“Thanks to the officers of ERO Boston, he will now be handed over to Brazilian authorities to serve his prison sentence. ERO Boston will not allow the world’s criminals to use New England as a hideout. We will continue to apprehend and remove egregious noncitizen offenders.”

Authorities continue to catch dangerous foreign criminals illegally present in the U.S., many of whom have been previously released into the country by law or immigration enforcement agencies.
