A Salvadoran male who illegally entered the U.S. just weeks after his girlfriend this summer has been charged with murdering her in Maryland, according to reports.
Gerber Luis Sanchez Centeno, 23, was reportedly wearing a GPS monitoring bracelet issued by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) at the time of his arrest last week in Montgomery County, MD.
On September 18, authorities were alerted by a 911 caller reporting an altercation between a female tenant and her boyfriend at a residence in Gaithersburg.
Dania Carolina Cruz-Mejia, 18, was found deceased at the scene.
Cruz-Mejia’s brother connected with Sanchez Centeno, who apologized via text message, claiming the killing was an accident and saying he would turn himself in, according to a police report reviewed by Fox 5.

At a bond hearing on Monday, Montgomery County Judge Aileen Oliver ruled Sanchez Centeno should not be released due to safety concerns.
“Gerber Luis Sanchez-Centeno is an unlawfully present 23-year-old Salvadoran national,” ICE explained in a statement to Fox 5 reporter Allison Papson.
“U.S. Border Patrol apprehended Sanchez June 2 after he unlawfully entered the United States near Santa Teresa, New Mexico. Later that day, ERO El Paso placed Sanchez into the Alternatives to Detention program with a GPS monitor.”

Sanchez Centeno reportedly arrived to Maryland from Texas just days before the slaying.
Cruz-Mejia, who had a lengthy romantic history with her alleged killer, arrived to the U.S. approximately five months ago under unspecified circumstances, according to a GoFundMe established to raise money to send her remains back to El Salvador.
“Her partner with whom she had shared the last years of her life decided to meet her again in the state of Maryland. 10 days after being back with Diana and her family, he took advantage of the moment when they were alone at home, an argument was put together that ended up taking the life of young Diana Carolina Cruz Mejía, leaving us devastated as family, friends and people who loved her so much,” the crowdfund page states.
Sanchez Centeno has been charged with first-degree murder.
