Senator Mitt Romney said Manhattan DA Alvin Bragg was guilty of “political malpractice” for prosecuting Donald Trump. Romney made the remarks on Saturday in an interview with Atlantic writer McKay Coppins.
“Bragg should have settled the case against Trump, as would have been the normal procedure. But he made a political decision,” Romney said.
“Bragg may have won the battle, for now, but he may have lost the political war. Democrats think they can put out the Trump fire with oxygen. It’s political malpractice.”
The remarks, while a criticism of the prosecution itself, are in no way an endorsement of Trump. Romney has been a staunch critic of the former president.
The Utah senator has described Trump as a “demagogue” and gave his support to both impeachment proceedings against Trump. He became the first ever senator in US history to vote to remove a sitting president from his own party.
Romney has admitted he didn’t vote for Trump in 2020, and wouldn’t in this year’s election.
At the beginning of the month, Romney suggested that, if he were in Biden’s position, he would pardon Trump, but not because it would be the right thing to do.
He told MSNBC: “I’d have pardoned President Trump. Why? Well, because it makes me, President Biden, the big guy and the person I pardoned a little guy.”
Romney is set to retire at the end of his current term, next January.
