A foreign national convicted of heinous sex crimes against children was released by officials in the sanctuary state of Connecticut who ignored a federal immigration detainer.
Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) announced the recent arrest of 28-year-old Sanjay Sivan Walsh after nearly 18 months on the loose.
On June 14, 2023, Walsh was convicted of two counts of second-degree sexual assault and conspiracy to tamper with evidence and sentenced to 10 years in prison.
However, the court suspended all but 21 months of the sentence, which Walsh had already served.
Walsh was ordered to register as a sex offender for 10 years and then released back to the streets by authorities at the Willard-Cybulski Correctional Institution – despite the fact that ICE had requested he be held until officers could take him into federal custody.
Officers from ICE Enforcement and Removal Operations (ERO) Boston finally apprehended Walsh on Dec. 17, 2024.
“Mr. Walsh was convicted of committing unspeakable crimes against two children, and he was sentenced to prison for it,” ERO Boston acting Field Office Director Patricia H. Hyde said in a statement.
“ERO Boston lodged an immigration detainer against him so our officers could safely arrest him upon his release, but the Connecticut Department of Corrections officials refused to honor the detainer. Our officers had to arrest Mr. Walsh in the community after his release from prison, even though he was convicted of terrible crimes against children and is removable from the U.S. based on his convictions.”

Walsh is currently in ICE custody pending deportation proceedings.
Connecticut became a sanctuary state with the passage of the Trust Act in 2013 and has implemented a variety of laws protecting illegal aliens from immigration enforcement in the years since.
Authorities continue to catch dangerous foreign criminals illegally present in the U.S., many of whom have been previously released by law enforcement agencies.
