Kamala Harris – Border Hawk?

If Kamala Harris wins in November, we can expect the same weaponized border as under the Biden administration. In fact, it might even be worse.

The presidential election is less than two months away and immigration is a major issue.

Here at Border Hawk we cannot endorse candidates or legislation.

But we can and should analyze the candidates and their platforms. Studying what they have said and done in the past gives us an idea what they might do in the future, given the chance.

Vice President Kamala Harris, the Democrats’ current candidate for president, has made some recent noises that might indicate she is getting tougher on immigration.

At least that’s what CNN told us in a recent article entitled, “Harris move to the center on border wall, asylum contradicts her years of progressive immigration positions.”

Wouldn’t that be great if true?

Here’s how the article begins:

Vice President Kamala Harris likes to portray herself as tough on the border and immigration.  Recent TV ads highlight her time as a “border state prosecutor” who aggressively targeted criminal cartels and drug smugglers, as well as her support for “the toughest border security bill in decades.”

That bill, which failed in the Senate in February and again in May, included $650 million for new border wall construction.

Actually that border bill wasn’t all it was cracked up to be, remember?

The CNN article contrasts what she’s saying now on the campaign trail with what she’s said in the past.

Images of the border wall built during the Trump administration are featured in the Harris ads, yet Harris repeatedly criticized the wall over the years, describing it as an affront to both hers and America’s values.

In her 2019 book, “The Truths We Hold,” Harris called the wall “useless” and said it was “nothing more than a symbol, a monument standing in opposition to not just everything I value, but to the fundamental values upon which this country was built.”

A CNN KFile review of Harris’ social media posts found that she criticized the border wall more than 50 times during the Trump administration, calling it, among other things, “stupid,” “useless,” and a “medieval vanity project.”

That’s a lot of criticism of the wall.

By the way, what is a “medieval vanity project” and how does it differ from other sorts of vanity projects?

As she tries to strengthen her image on the border, Harris will have to reckon with her years of opposing some of the very policies she now embraces. That includes building more border wall and also making it harder for migrants to come to the US seeking asylum.

It would be really something if Kamala has had a change of heart and now wants to secure the border.

But color me skeptical, for two very important reasons:

1. It’s campaign time.

Of course Kamala is tacking to the middle, it’s campaign time. It’s an election.

According to polling, the border situation is not popular with the American people.

So obviously the Kamala Campaign must present its candidate as somebody who would work to improve the border situation.

The Tough Border Kamala stuff sounds impressive, especially if people don’t think too deeply about it, because there’s a glaring contradiction at the heart of the Kamala Border Promises…

2. Kamala is part of the current administration.

The Biden-Harris administration took over in January of 2021, unleashing a border invasion which has brought in millions of illegal aliens who have settled throughout the country.

Yes, it’s an invasion — but it’s not an accident. It’s not due to incompetence or lack of attention. It’s the direct result of administration policy.

Therefore, for anybody in the Biden administration — Kamala, Mayorkas, Biden himself, anybody — to complain about the border is ridiculous.

They’ve owned it for the past 43 months and if there are changes they want to make, they could have already made them.

CONCLUSION

If Kamala Harris wins in November, we can expect the same weaponized border as under the Biden administration. In fact, it might even be worse.

Once again, Border Hawk does not endorse candidates or legislation. We encourage readers to think for themselves.
