At least seven people, including five firefighters, have been injured during an enormous blaze at an apartment building in New York City on Friday, according to reports.
The conflagration erupted at around 1:30 a.m. at a six-story apartment building in the East Bronx.
“Heavy wind conditions” fueled a rapid spread of the flames, pushing the blaze to five-alarm status within an hour – the highest level, the FDNY stated.

Hundreds of emergency responders were surged to the scene, including nearly 200 firefighters, authorities said at a press conference.
“No serious injuries to report, and thats a miracle,” FDNY Commissioner Robert Tucker said. “This was a very, very large fire. Wind driven, as the Mayor said. Very difficult fire for our firefighters to fight under conditions that caused us to have to have lots of relief.”

“Heavy fire destroyed the all the apartments on the top floor and burnt through the roof. Initially, we had fire companies inside conducting searches, removing people and attempting to fight the fire,” FDNY Chief John Esposito explained in a statement.
“The fire had too much headway. It was extremely dangerous for our firefighters. We removed them from the building, and we’re using tower ladders to extinguish the rest of the building, and we’re continuing with that operation.”
Simultaneously, historic fires have been tearing through Los Angeles for days, with evidence that bad actors have intentionally set or exacerbated the various conflagrations.
