The mayor of a small Georgia town has resigned after he and his wife were arrested over the weekend on child sex crimes.
Climax Mayor Joseph Kelly, 38, and his wife Natalie, 44, were booked on Saturday, the former charged with two counts of second-degree cruelty to children, while the latter faces two child negligence charges.
In a statement mirrored by the the Decatur County Sheriff’s Office, the Georgia Bureau of Investigations on Sunday noted:
On Saturday, May 31, 2025, the Decatur County Sheriff’s Office requested the assistance of the Georgia Bureau of Investigation to investigate allegations that Joseph Kelly had sexual contact with multiple minors. Both Joseph and Natalie Kelly were arrested later that same day by GBI agents and Decatur County Sheriff’s Office investigators. They were booked into the Decatur County Jail.
“Arrest warrants allege that Kelly molested two minors, and that Grubbs [Natalie Kelly] knew it was happening,” reports the Atlanta Journal-Constitution.
In addition to being mayor of the town of about 270, Kelly also worked as a math teacher in the Decatur County School District and was reportedly named teacher of the year in 2019.
“At this time, there is no indication that the alleged acts are related to his employment,” the Bureau added.
The pair have reportedly been released on bond, with Kelly posting $55,400 and his wife posting $11,400.
WTXL reports Kelly on Wednesday tendered his resignation as mayor, a position he’s held since 2020. His school employment status is unclear.
The GBI notes the “investigation is active & ongoing” and evidence will be turned over to the Attorney’s office for prosecution.
