Actor Matthew McConaughey visited the White House this week using his clout to promote gun control, however many called him out for having no problems with guns throughout his film career.
According to the Internet Movie Firearms Database (IMFDB), which keeps track of the types of guns used in movies, the True Detective actor has handled about 18 different firearms in 11 feature films throughout his 26-year acting career.
Here’s a list of all the times he’s glorified so-called “gun violence” on film and television:
The actor’s apparent hypocrisy was not left unchecked on social media.

During a White House press briefing Tuesday, McConaughey told reporters the school shooting in his hometown of Uvalde, Texas, should be used as an opportunity to enact gun control.
“As I said, this moment is different… We are in a window of opportunity right now that we have not been in before. A window in where it seems like real change — real change can happen,” he told reporters.
“We need responsible gun ownership,” he added. “We need background checks. We need to raise the minimum age to purchase an AR-15 rifle to 21. We need a waiting period for those rifles. We need red flag laws, and consequences for those who abuse them. These are reasonable practical tactical regulations.”
Seeing through the emotional speech, one reporter asked McConaughey, “Are you grandstanding?” as the actor left the briefing room podium without taking questions.

McConaughey, who advocated the safe use of firearms on film sets after actor Alec Baldwin killed cinematographer Halyna Hutchins, has made similar pleas in the past, joining the March for Our Lives in 2018 to call for an “assault weapons” ban and limiting “high capacity” magazines.

“One, let’s ban the assault weapons for civilians. This is a no-brainer. And to my friends out there that are responsible owners of these recreational assault weapons that they use for recreation, please let’s just take one for the team here and set it down. That issue saves lives,” the former prospective gubernatorial candidate said during a speech at the Texas capitol building, going on to call for magazine restrictions and stronger background checks.
While the Hollywood actor with a reported net worth of over $160 million wants less Americans to own firearms, he apparently has no problem with his own security detail being armed.
